Before contacting a supplier, the procurement team should have the following information ready. Incomplete information leads to assumptions — and assumptions lead to mismatched equipment.
Workpiece Data
- Maximum shell weight (including nozzles, supports, and internals) — determines the required load capacity
- Shell diameter range (minimum and maximum) — determines roll spacing and rotator type
- Shell length — determines the number of roll sets and support point placement
- Wall thickness — affects shell rigidity and roller material selection
- Material type (carbon steel, stainless, clad) — determines roller material and surface protection requirements
- Surface finish requirements — determines whether roller contact will damage the finished surface
Welding Process Data
- Welding process (SAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW) — different processes have different travel speed and precision needs
- Required welding travel speed range — determines the rotation speed range and VFD specification
- Circumferential or longitudinal welds (or both) — determines whether anti-drift and holding brake are needed
- Single-pass or multi-pass welds — multi-pass welds require longer rotation time and more consistent speed control

Operating Environment

Phase 2 — Supplier Evaluation
When evaluating a supplier, the following capabilities indicate whether they understand tank fabrication requirements — or are simply selling a generic product.
- Diameter and load review: Supplier asks about shell weight, diameter, length, and wall thickness before quoting
- Speed calculation support: Supplier discusses welding travel speed and converts it to rotation speed for the specific shell diameter
- Roller material recommendation: Supplier explains trade-offs between PU, rubber, and steel for the specific application
- Anti-drift solution: Supplier recommends an option appropriate for the shell length and weld type
- Current conduction device: Supplier confirms a dedicated grounding assembly is included
- Frame stress relief: Supplier confirms post-weld heat treatment on the frame
- Tractive pull and eccentric load assessment: Supplier asks about eccentric loads and calculates tractive pull
- Pre-shipment testing: Supplier offers video or photos of the rotator under load before shipping

Phase 3 — Pre-Order Confirmation
Before placing the order, confirm the following items in writing. Verbal agreements are not sufficient for overseas procurement.

Phase 4 — Pre-Shipment Verification
Before the rotator leaves the factory, the following items should be verified — through photos, video, or third-party inspection.

On Loaded Testing
The pre-shipment test scope should be agreed according to the project. Where a representative loaded test is feasible, the test load, duration, speed, and acceptance criteria should be confirmed in the procurement specification. If a loaded test is not feasible, the supplier should at minimum provide a documented functional test at the required speed range.
Reference: Chinese Machinery Industry Standard
The Chinese machinery industry standard JB/T 9187-1999 (a recommended industry standard, not a national mandatory standard) provides technical requirements that may serve as a useful reference for procurement teams. When a project references JB/T 9187-1999, buyers should obtain the applicable clauses and confirm how the supplier demonstrates compliance. Project-specific specifications should take priority over a general reference to the standard.
Note: JB/T 9187-1999 is a machinery industry recommended standard. It provides a technical reference but is not a mandatory national standard. Buyers should use it as a baseline reference, not as a replacement for project-specific requirements.

On Certification Requirements
CE, UL/ULC, and ISO 9001 serve different functions and should not be treated as equivalent:
- CE marking: Product compliance requirement for the EU market. The responsibility for CE compliance lies with the entity placing the equipment on the EU market, which may involve conformity assessment and a Declaration of Conformity.
- UL/ULC: Third-party certifications that may be expected in North American markets by insurance providers or local regulations. Not universally mandatory, but commonly requested.
- ISO 9001: Quality management system certification. It demonstrates the supplier’s quality management framework but does not certify the product itself.
Specify which certifications are required for your market and confirm that the supplier can provide valid, current certificates before placing the order.

FAQ
What is the most commonly overlooked item on this checklist?
The current conduction device. Many buyers do not think about the welding current path until the rotator is on the floor and the welding cables are being connected. Confirm this item before ordering.
Do I need a fit-up rotator for tank fabrication?
If your fabrication process includes shell section alignment before welding, a fit-up rotator with hydraulic lifting and horizontal movement may be appropriate where lifting and horizontal alignment are required. If your process only requires rotation for welding (not alignment), a conventional or self-aligning rotator may be sufficient. The positioning accuracy of a fit-up rotator should be confirmed with the supplier based on product specifications or test methods.
What should I do if the supplier cannot provide a loaded rotation test?
Request an unloaded rotation test at the minimum required speed, with video documentation. If the supplier cannot provide even an unloaded test video, consider whether the risk of receiving a defective unit is acceptable for an overseas order.
How important is frame stress relief?
It is a long-term reliability factor. A frame that is not stress-relieved may gradually distort under repeated heavy loading, causing the rolls to become misaligned. The effect is not immediate — it appears over time — but when it appears, the only solution is to re-machine or replace the frame.
What documentation should I insist on receiving?
At minimum: outline and mounting drawings, operation manual, maintenance guide, spare parts list, and certification documents. For overseas buyers, this documentation is the primary reference for installation, operator training, and future maintenance.
